“My process typically begins with a notebook and free writing. This practice helps me uncover themes I’m subconsciously drawn to at the time, and I enjoy its physical, time-consuming nature. From there, I move into exploration, research, and planning, and I begin editing the texts that emerged during free writing. These writings often evolve into poems and audio works, or sometimes transform into purely visual, textless pieces.”

Ula Grinevičiūtė (*2003) is a Lithuanian artist currently pursuing a BFA at the Zurich University of the Arts, Switzerland. Her process usually starts with writing. Sometimes the text is the artpiece; other times it becomes the foundation for works in other mediums. From audio installations to etchings, her works include a lot folk and nature motives, repetition and collaging, from found sound to collected image or other materials. Through these processes she aims to create artpieces that become experiences.

    To lie naked on the ground and watch the sky.
    To sink into the mud,
    coolness enveloping around the feet,
    earth seeping into skin and nails.
    To calmly gaze at the sky,
    to gradually become absorbed,

    repeat the same thoughts,
    wait for something that will never come,
    fear the same things, as always,
    love the same ones.


    To submerge deeper,
    to breathe the earth's water, air and minerals,
    to refresh,
    to revive the overheated, inflamed body.
    To pour out the same things, as always,
    into the depths.
    To think them no more.

    Silence.


    To look at the sky, the clouds, the fog,
    and no longer think.
    Only sight remains—
    it's feeding you.

    To wash away everything that hinders,
    tenderly,
    to leave some mud.
    To stretch your hands upward,
    to stretch and warm your legs.


    To be a weightless sphere, 
    hovering above a body of water.

    To be a veil of mist at dawn,
    hovering above a body of water.
