“Gold Whip consists of five toilet paper imprints made with four molds, each tinted with a shade from the namesake eyeshadow palette. The embossments combine makeup layout with a toilet paper pattern. Drawn to the unnoticed, I dedicate time to things that are flushed down the toilet. Base, Crease, Eyelid, Browbone, Definer, embossed in color pans, read like a tutorial, evoking the act of painting. I'm intrigued by the kolorit of cosmetics where naming is about building a lore around the color.”

Chewed-off fingernails, Essence eyeshadow palette and toilet paper hint at the material details listed in several of her works. Alena Stadler often works with lowbrow materials, which she treats with care and delicacy as if they were the most precious things. She has an interest in the ordinary, she’s drawn to overlooked, body-related and common objects. The act of transforming takes shape in many ways in her work.
