“My work emerges from the study of ornament. From the beginning, I was particularly interested in its relationship with nature, especially with flowers. Ornament continually strives to imitate flora, to appear organic and to petrify its beauty. These pieces explore ornaments as gardens and, when installed in the subway, question the role of floral decoration in a world that is becoming increasingly less green.”

Jeanine Castillo is a Mexican artist whose practice focuses on the study of ornament through interventions in diverse surfaces, in constant dialogue with anthropology. Above all, she recognizes ornament as a current and contemporary phenomenon. For Castillo, the ornament acquires a dimension of resistance by inviting contemplation in modern life and its productivity standards. Her work has been presented in Mexico, Germany and Switzerland and is currently working and studying in Karlsruhe, Germany.
